Description
Nelson Cottage is a house dating from about 1600, with alterations and extensions in the 18th century, around 1900, and later. The original structure is timber-framed, with a brick extension. The exterior is colour washed with pebbledash, and has tile and slate roofs. It began as a two-bay house with an external stack and a staircase wing.
The house originally had a gabled staircase wing positioned centrally to the front. An 18th-century extension was added to the left front, featuring a catslide roof and a flat-topped dormer. A more recent brick addition is located on the left bay. A red brick external stack, with offsets and a quadrant oven to the front, is situated on the right end wall. A two-storey extension, with a slate roof, was built around 1900 to the rear right. The original entrance has been blocked, and access is now through the 1900s and 20th-century extensions.
Inside, the house retains exposed timber framing and an original brick fireplace with timber jambs and a lintel. Prior to around 1840-50, the building operated as The Mops and Brooms Alehouse, and from that time until 1932, as The Lord Nelson public house.
