Description
The War Memorial, located in St John's Churchyard, was designed by C.F.A. Voysey and erected in 1920. It is made of Portland stone and features a tall base topped by a Free Gothic column and cross. The pedestal has a cornice and a dedicatory inscription, along with the names of the war dead inscribed in fine gold lettering on the other three sides. The octagonal column has concave sides and a loosely foliate capital. The pedestal is supported by diagonal buttresses with finials, and there are flying buttresses leading to the column. Similar flying buttresses support the iron cross, which is painted gold. The memorial was re-erected in 1973 on a stepped circular base at the site of the demolished Church of St. John the Baptist.
