Description
The mausoleum, built in 1880, is located about 400 meters northwest of Wrotham Park in Potters Bar. It was constructed for George Stevens Byng, 2nd Earl of Strafford of the third creation. The structure is made of Portland stone and has a square plan with square sections cut out at the corners. Blocked Doric columns are positioned at each corner, and there is a continuous heavy cornice topped with urns. A small dome with a skylight sits on a square drum. The building features quoining and has an inscription on the south side that reads, "And in the Garden a Sepulchre" from the Gospel of John, chapter 19, verse 17. A datestone with a coronet is located on the north side. There are iron gates from 1918 to the south, and the mausoleum is enclosed by a railing.
