Description
This row of four almshouses was built in 1864 for G. Byng, the 2nd Earl of Strafford. The buildings are constructed of English bond red brick with cement rendered dressings and feature a slate roof. They are single-storey structures with six bays, including two paired entrances flanked by windows. The entrances have chamfered surrounds and keystone blocks, with timber doors that have decorative hinges. Each almshouse has timber gabled porches on brick bases, adorned with wavy bargeboards. The windows are two-light glazing bar casements with quoined jambs and cornices above the lintels. A plinth runs along the base, and there is a simple rendered cornice at the eaves. Quoins are present at the return ends of the buildings. The row features a large central stack and two smaller end stacks, all with diagonally set bricks below the cornices. The almshouses have been extended to the rear. Although the interior was not inspected, there is a forecourt wall about 1 meter high, with pyramidal heads on the piers flanking the entrances and a semi-circular top course.
