Description

5, 7, and 9 Church Street is a terrace of three houses built in the late 19th century, incorporating part of a structure from the late 16th or early 17th century that continues from No. 3. The houses are constructed of red brick laid in Flemish bond, with a concrete tiled roof, although No. 9 retains its original tiles. The roof features a dogtooth and band brick cornice, and there are red brick chimneystacks.

The exterior consists of two storeys and attics, with four box casement dormers on the rear roof slope. The first floor has four irregularly spaced recessed sash windows with divided glazing, set beneath segmental rubbed brick arches that have alternating bands of red and black brick. On the ground floor, there are three sash windows under similar arches. No. 5 features a part-glazed 19th-century door with two lower flush panels, No. 7 has a modern half-glazed door, and No. 9 has a 19th-century door with two full-length flush panels. The rear of the houses has part plaster and modern pargetting.

Inside, there are several bays of braced tie beam construction with exposed beams that have chamfer and tongue stops. No. 5 contains two attics, although the roof is not accessible. No. 9 shows evidence of a former jettied front, with roof purlins exposed in the attic and a roof structure featuring heavy halved and paired rafters without a ridge.
