Barn. C14 or early C15. Probably built after 1301, when 'La Syngledehall' manor was joined to that of Mathams by Sampson or Hamelin Matham (died 1382), but possibly by John Leventhorpe c.1414 (VCH III (1912) 340). Late C16 brick wall extending 4 metres from SW corner, part of forecourt of Shingle Hall. Large, 5-bay, aisled barn facing W. Timber frame weatherboarded. Very steep, high roof, half-hipped on S but hipped with gablet on N. Projecting central porch on W with hipped roof. Double doors on E side in central bay. Roofs formerly thatched but now covered in corrugated iron, painted black. Crown post roof structure with tall square crown posts, and square section braces to collar purlin. Curved braces from arcade posts to arcade plate but long straight braces to tie beams. N bay modified to allow aisle to run round N end. Straight struts from aisle ties to purlin over each aisle. Large timberframed medieval barn of outstanding interest. Part of group of historic farm buildings at Shingle Hall.
