Description
Millfield Cottage is a house that dates from the 17th century or earlier. It is a long, one and a half storey timber-framed building facing south. The gabled thatched roof extends over a continuous rear outshut. The gable ends are weatherboarded, while the front and rear walls are plastered with a weatherboarded apron. Originally, it had a three-unit plan with a chimney stack at the upper (west) end of the hall, and a cross passage with service rooms at the lower (east) end. An eyebrow dormer on the front wall plate suggests that the hall was once floored over, but the floor has since been removed, and the parlour bay has been demolished, leaving the fireplace projecting on the west side. A lateral rear chimney at the northeast features 18th-century brickwork above the roof. There is a 19th-century wooden casement window in the east gable attic, a small timber storm porch at the door, and a modern stable door leading into the east room. The cottage forms the south wing of a later house that is not of special interest.
