Description

59 and 61 Cambridge Road is a house that has been divided into two properties. It dates from the early 16th century, with a 17th-century floor and chimney added in the hall. The building was subdivided in the late 18th century or early 19th century. The structure features a timber frame that is plastered at the front, while the upper part of the northern wing is weatherboarded, and the southern end is weatherboarded at the rear and northern end. The roof is steep and covered with old red tiles.

Originally, this was a late medieval open hall house with two storeys and jettied crosswings to the north and south. The northern wing is jettied at the rear, likely to provide a landing for the original staircase. The southern service wing has a hipped roof at the back, and there are opposed doors that indicate a cross passage, which has been blocked by a later staircase and lobby in the southern house. A central chimney was inserted at the lower end of the hall. The staircase in the northern wing and the external chimney on the northern side are probably original, while there is a later external stack at the southern end.

The central part of the building, which faces west, has one and a half storeys and features a gabled dormer at the eaves, with a window below and doors next to each projecting wing. Each wing has one window on each floor, with two-light flush casement windows that have small panes; the first floor of the southern wing has a three-light window. There is one boarded door and one flush four-panelled door, both set in plain doorcases with small hoods. The front jetties are underbuilt in plastered brickwork, and there is a four-panel flush door at the southern end. The roof structure features crown posts.
