Description

The Old Rectory is a building that was originally constructed as a rectory and is now a house. It features the date 'AD 1889' on a brick panel on the west front. Designed by Fred Chancellor for E S Bowlby of Gilston Park, the structure is made of red brick and showcases an irregular Arts and Crafts style with two storeys and attics topped by a steep red tiled pyramid roof.

The west side has a wooden porch adorned with strapwork and a grotesque mask in the plastered triangular gable, along with small side railings over low brick walls. The entrance includes half-glazed panelled doors with sidelights and fanlights. To the right, there is a three-sided bay window with a combination of 12/1, 18/2, and 12/1 panes, featuring segmental arches made of red rubbers and a parapet above. The front also includes two gabled dormers.

The south front is asymmetrical and picturesque, featuring a two-storey canted bay on the right, a door, an oval window, and a tall stair window in the centre, with a pair of windows to the left, all topped by a projecting tile-hung gable supported by large moulded brackets. There are single-storey service buildings extending to the right. The north front has three windows and a large projecting chimney, along with a four-light ogee-topped dormer window.

The Old Rectory is a splendid example of Arts and Crafts architecture and has seen little alteration since its construction. It was sold around 1978 when the benefices merged.
