Description
This is an early 19th-century iron gate, originally part of the park at Gilston Park. The gate is wide and made of wrought iron, supported by square iron piers with a neo-classical design. Short lengths of projecting railing run along each side of the piers. Each pier features cast anthemion ornament and urns at the corners, with similar urns also marking the ends of the railings. The upper part of the piers has crossed members with dished bosses at the intersection and where they meet the main uprights. Scrolls support a lattice rail topped with spearheads in the lower part of the piers, and a similar lattice rail separates a lower section with alternating bars and arrows from an upper section with spears rising through the top member, which is swept down to meet a curved rail arching up from the middle rail. This is a delicate example of neo-classical wrought ironwork. It was likely moved from near the main house when Gilston Park was rebuilt in a Gothic style by Hardwick for John Hodgson in 1852.
