Description
Church Cottages, located at the corner with Pennys Lane, are a pair of houses built in 1852, as indicated by a quatrefoil datestone on the east gable. This tall red brick building features Gothic architectural elements and is situated prominently on a corner site facing east. The cottages are two storeys high, topped with a steeply pitched slate roof that has heavy moulded bargeboards and a moulded pendant. A large central chimney has five diagonal flues, each with moulded caps and bases.
The design includes a north range with a south cross wing. There are three windows: tall two-light mullioned windows on the first floor with cast iron lattice casements, flat gauged arches, and flush stone sills. The ground floor of the north range has three-light windows, while the cross wing features a single-storey, three-sided stone bay window with a brick base, cast iron lattice lights, and a hipped metal roof. Rustic gabled porches, supported by tree trunks, are located at the south and north ends. There are also marks of a blocked door in the angle between the wings. This elaborate block of estate houses is characteristic of the Gilston Park Estate under John Hodgson and is part of a group with the parish church.
