Description
The Johnston Monument is located at the southwest corner of the churchyard of Gilston Parish Church. Erected in 1923, this monument features a carved stone crucifixion group at about chest height. The figure of Christ is carved in relief on a tapering cross with slightly tapered arms. The cubic base-block has fine lettercutting that includes an inscription in memory of Geoffrey Stewart Johnston, who was killed in Flanders in 1915. To the right, there is a separate tapered, pointed stone with Our Lady carved in relief and an inscription dedicated to Rose Alice Johnston, who died in 1907. On the left, a similar stone features St John and an inscription for Reginald Eden Johnston, who died in 1922. This monument is an outstanding example of relief figure-carving and fine lettercutting, and it is part of a group with the medieval parish church.
