Description

54 St Andrew Street is a house that has been converted into offices, dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century. It features a timber frame with plaster and a Welsh slated gambrel roof, oriented gable end to the street. On the left side, there is a tall brown brick chimneystack with a projecting band. The building has a central staircase plan and is one room deep, positioned at right angles to the street.

The exterior consists of two storeys and attics. The first floor has a single sixteen-pane sash window set in a shallow recess, while the ground floor features a squatter proportioned sixteen-pane window. There is a six-pane attic window as well. The entrance is located in the centre of the right (east) flank elevation, showcasing a six-panel door with glazed top panels. This door is adorned with a three-light 'gothick' headed traceried fanlight, all set within a moulded architrave surround that includes a frieze and a moulded shallow cornice hood. To the right, there is a shallow canted triple sash bay window, with a flush set sash window above it. At the rear, there is a long timber framed and weatherboarded outshoot with a Welsh slated roof, comprising both two storey and one storey sections.

Inside, the building features a dogleg stair with Tuscan Doric newels, stick balusters, and moulded swept handrails. The rear room contains a large range fireplace with a reeded surround, decorated with paterae, and a shelf supported by cut profiled console brackets. The rear outshoot includes a small amount of reused timber from an earlier building, although the evidence of this is fragmentary.
