Description
Black Cottage at Gilston Park is a house dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with extensions added in the 18th or 19th century and a single-storey front extension built around 1930. The building is two storeys tall and features timber framing with plaster on a hillside, facing south. The west end has one and a half storeys that are much lower and set at an angle. It has steep old red tile gabled roofs, with the roof of the older part having an asymmetrical pitch, featuring a flatter slope and higher eaves at the front.
On the first floor, there are two 2-light windows with cast iron frames and rectangular panes, while the ground floor has pointed lights in the front (now part of a glazed extension) and on the west end. A small boarded external door is located in the apex of the west gable. The house has a central chimney plan with the west room being a step higher. The door and staircase are at the east end, adjacent to a red brick chimney from the east extension, which has its ground floor five steps down. The central chimney has been rebuilt. Additionally, there is a flat-roofed, well-glazed south extension designed for an artist. This is an interesting timber-framed house from around 1700, featuring some alterations and Gothic cast iron casement windows.
