Description

Hill Cottage is a 18th century, double-depth, two-storey timber-framed house located on the west side of London Road. It features pantiled gabled roofs and a longitudinal valley gutter, with a front slope to the street that has a bellcast, now tiled. The south side is covered with weatherboarding, while the north side is plastered. The front, made of 19th century colourwashed brick, has a large lateral chimney on the south part and a small external gable chimney on the north.

The symmetrical front has three windows, with clasping corner pilasters and a projecting band under the eaves. The first floor has recessed plate glass sashes, while the ground floor features twin canted bays with hipped roofs and large plate glass sashes flanked by narrower sidelights. The central door is accessed by three stone steps and is topped by a flat hood supported by slender tapered cast iron columns with moulded necking and an annulet at half height.

Attached to the north side is a single-storey timber-framed outbuilding built on a brick base. This outbuilding is weatherboarded and has a pantiled roof with a gable facing the street, decorated by a 19th century elaborate pierced bargeboard with a finial. It includes an eight-paned central window with crown glass and a 19th century two-pane centre-hung vent in the gable. Hill Cottage is part of an architectural group on the west side of the road and is noted for its picturesque qualities.
