Description

This is a 17th-century forge, altered and extended in the 19th century and now converted into a house. The original forge, at a right angle to the road, is a single-story timber-framed structure, later faced with brick in the 19th century. It has a red pantile roof. Attached to the front is a small, two-story brick front block with a gabled slate roof.

The forge's roof structure features collar and clasped purlins, with long curved braces supporting the tie beam. The front block has overhanging eaves, narrow bargeboards on the north and south gables, and a low, offset plinth. The ground floor has two wide, segmental arched recesses, each containing a tall French window with vertical margin lights and a segmental gauged arch above. The brickwork of the front block changes over eight courses above the window sills, indicating two separate phases of building. These arches were originally open, providing access to the forge.

The building is of both architectural and industrial historical interest, forming a picturesque part of the group of buildings on the west side of London Road.
