Description
These are a group of semi-detached houses located on North Road in Hertford, dating to around 1825, with later alterations. They are constructed of stucco to the front, sides, and rear outshoots, and have hipped roofs covered in Welsh slate. The roofs have a moulded cornice with widely spaced modillions, and a central stuccoed multi-flue chimney stack topped with orange clay pots.
The houses are three storeys high and comprise a four-bay front, with recessed wings. Originally single bay, these wings were later extended; No.15 was extended to create a separate small dwelling on the left, and No.19 was extended to the right to connect to No.21. The second floor has four recessed six-pane sash windows; the first floor has four recessed twelve-pane sash windows above a decorative band. The ground floor has four recessed fifteen-pane sash windows set within an outer arched recess that projects with an impost band. A stucco plinth is present. A recessed wing on the right has a 20th-century nine-pane arched window on the ground floor, a six-pane sash on the first floor, and a six-pane sash on a set back second floor. A two-storey, set-back wing is on the left, and a linking wing on the right, both stuccoed and with Welsh slate roofs. These wings each have a single sash window on both the ground and first floors, with an entrance to No.19 in the right-hand wing.
The interiors have not been inspected. The houses were part of a group of similar pairs, some of which have been altered or linked. They are representative of the expansion of Hertford along North Road towards the County Hospital in the late 1820s, and were known as “North Crescent” on an 1830 map. Nos 15 & 17 were also listed on 12/04/1973.
