Description

These are a pair of semi-detached houses located on North Road, Hertford, built around 1825 and altered in the late 19th century. The front is stuccoed, while the rear and outshoots are brown brick laid in a Flemish bond pattern. The roofs are hipped and covered in Welsh slate, with central stuccoed chimney stacks above a moulded cornice.

The houses are three storeys high, with a four-bay front and recessed single-bay wings. The wing to the left (number 11) is partially overlapped by the curved front return of the adjoining properties at numbers 3-9. The second floor has four recessed six-pane sash windows; the first floor, four recessed twelve-pane sash windows above a decorative band. The ground floor features four recessed fifteen-pane sash windows, set within an outer arched recess with a projecting impost band rising from a stucco plinth. The recessed wing to the right has a double arched recess on the ground floor, now containing a 20th-century fixed six-pane window. A late 19th-century multi-panelled, half-glazed door provides access on the right-hand side, accompanied by a late 19th-century canted bay window with a dentil course, heavy moulded cornice and colonnettes.

The interior was not inspected during the listing process.

The houses are part of a group of similar pairs, some of which have been altered and linked. They were constructed as part of the development of Hertford along North Road towards the County Hospital in the late 1820s and were known as 'North Crescent' on a map from 1830.
