Description

The property comprises two semi-detached houses located on North Road, Hertford, dating to the early 19th century. The front of the houses is stuccoed, while the rear is constructed of brown brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with some stucco to the left-hand outshoot. The roofs are hipped and covered in Welsh slate, featuring a moulded cornice with widely spaced modillions and a central stuccoed multi-flue chimneystack.

The houses are three storeys high with a four-bay front, incorporating recessed wings. The wing on the left is single-storey, connected to No. 29 by a two-storey linking wing with a Welsh slate roof. The wing on the right is three-storeys and features a Welsh slate roof hidden behind a parapet and cornice, linked with the main block. The second floor has four recessed six-pane sash windows, the first floor has four recessed twelve-pane sash windows above a decorative band, and the ground floor contains four recessed fifteen-pane sash windows within outer arched recesses featuring projecting impost bands, set on a stucco plinth.

The recessed wing on the left (No. 29) features an arched entrance with a six-panel door and a semicircular fanlight. To its left is a simpler two-storey link with two sash windows on the first floor. A similar entrance is present at No. 31, with a three-storey stuccoed wing featuring blank arches, tall pilaster strips, and a single sash window on each floor set within a segmental arched recess.

The rear elevation has four sash windows on the first and second floors, all recessed under brick arches; the outer windows are positioned at landing level. The interiors have not been inspected.

These houses were constructed as part of the expansion of Hertford along North Road towards the County Hospital during the late 1820s, and were originally known as 'North Crescent' as shown on a map from 1830.
