Description
The gazebo within the garden of the former Amwell House is a Grade II* listed structure, built around 1768 by John Scott, the Quaker poet. It was restored in 1990 and is situated on the summit of a hillside above Scott's garden, constructed above a grotto. The gazebo has a single-storey, octagonal plan with a high brick plinth and features two flights of flint steps leading to the entrance, which includes a half-glazed door topped by a pointed fanlight with Gothic tracery. The remaining walls have three flush-set Gothic arched casement windows with tracery, alternating with flint-faced panels. It is topped with an old tiled roof and has a moulded wood cornice. Scott referred to it as his "airy octagon," from which he enjoyed a panoramic view stretching from Hertford, across Ware to Great Amwell, a theme explored in his long poem "Amwell."
