Description
The Sportsman Public House is a building that was originally a house, dating from the mid to late 18th century, with some alterations and extensions made in the 20th century. It features a timber frame, stucco exterior with red brick angle pilasters arranged in Flemish bond, and an old tiled roof with lead roll hips and a moulded eaves cornice, along with a Welsh slated roof over the front pediment. The building has red brick chimneys topped with oversailing courses and earthenware and terracotta pots.
The exterior consists of two storeys with an attic in the center. The front elevation includes a first floor with three narrow 8-pane sash windows, which are nearly flush with moulded architrave surrounds, although the central window is obscured by the inn sign. The ground floor has two wider 12-pane windows. The central doorway features a six-fielded panelled door, with the upper two panels glazed, set within a wood doorcase that has panelled Tuscan pilasters, an entablature, and a pediment. The attic has a large pediment with a moulded surround and a central attic casement window with small panes. At the rear, there is a long single-storey outshoot along South Street, which has attics, five small sash windows, and two hipped dormers with sashes. The building has undergone external and internal alterations and was extended in 1981.
The interior bar spaces have been reconstructed and now feature late 20th-century fittings. The interior above the ground floor has not been inspected.
