Description
The Windmill Tower, located 220 metres west-northwest of Mill House in Little Hadham, is a mid-18th century structure, with deeds dating from 1748 to 1870. This tall, two-storey tower is built of red brick in English bond and has an octagonal shape. It features two plinth offsets at the base and has very thick walls that are vertical on the inside but battered on the outside. There are high openings on the south, north, and east faces, while a doorway is located on the west side. The tower shows a line of socket holes that were used for props for a higher timber staging. Originally, it served as the base for a five-storey smock mill that was in operation until the 1930s. The upper part of the tower was destroyed by fire in 1981. This structure is a striking industrial monument with significant historic and technological interest.
