Description
26 Bell Street is a tall house, likely built around 1700 or earlier, with significant alterations made in the early 19th century, including a raised roof and a new front. The ground floor windows and door were updated in the late 19th century. The building has two storeys, attics, and a cellar, with a stucco front and a brick colourwashed east gable. The west gable is partly plastered. The roof has a low pitch and is slated, featuring two rounded-topped dormers, broad eaves overhang, a moulded cornice gutter, and a panelled soffit. There are internal gable chimneys and a steep rear slope covered with old red tiles. A projecting wing extends to the rear.
The street-facing side is symmetrical, with plain pilasters near the corners that rise from a projecting plinth, and paired brackets at the top that support the eaves. There are two additional brackets spaced wider apart between the pilasters. The two dormers have flush sash windows with 5/5 panes. On the first floor, there are three flush sash windows with moulded architraves, arranged with 10/10, 6/6, and 10/10 panes. The ground floor features paired plate glass sash windows, each pair surrounded by a single raised surround with a bracketed cill, an attached column between the windows, and a projecting moulded cornice supported by small scrolled brackets. The central door is recessed and has a six-panel design with a raised surround and a flat moulded hood held up by large scrolled brackets. Inside, there is a panelled room at the front on the ground floor east side.
