Description
14, 16, 18 and 18A Castle Street is a house that now includes a shop and offices at the left (No. 18). It dates from the 16th and 17th centuries but has been much altered and substantially rebuilt between 1979 and 1980, with Nos. 14, 16, and 18A now known as 1, 2, and 3 Millers Court. The building is timber-framed and plastered, with a ground floor featuring black-stained weatherboarding and tiled roofs. The gable faces the street on the left, forming a cross wing, and there are rebuilt red brick chimneystacks.
The exterior is two storeys with an attic for Nos. 14 and 16. The first floor has four flush-set two-light wood casements with divided glazing and architrave surrounds. The ground floor on the left has a 20th-century timber arcaded shopfront with a recessed entry, a fascia flanked by consoles, and three four-light wood casement windows with divided glazing set low near the pavement. There are projecting gables and lean-tos at the rear, and the roofs feature a modern gabled casement dormer on the right.
The interior has not been inspected but was substantially rebuilt between 1974 and 1980. This building forms part of a group with No. 20 and No. 24.
