Description
No. 5 West Street is a house that later became an inn and is now the entrance to a supermarket with offices above. It dates back to the 16th century and underwent significant alterations in the 19th century. The ground floor was completely renovated in 1979 to create the supermarket, which involved demolishing most of the rear extensions and building a large single-storey shopping hall that is not of historical interest.
The building has two storeys, with the first floor covered in stucco above a fascia featuring twin consoles and a cornice from the former 19th-century shopfront. The roof is covered with Welsh slates. There are three flush-set sash windows with small panes and one modern raised sash window under the eaves above the former carriageway. The ground floor has modern, irregularly spaced yellow brick piers and a recessed shopfront. To the right, there is a former carriageway leading to the inn yard, with heavy posts visible between the modern brick infill.
Inside, there is a cased-in chimney breast on the left. The first floor construction is cased, and the roof is divided into four bays, with some smoke-blackened rafters that indicate its 16th-century origins. Notches for former collars suggest it was originally a crown post roof, which has since been converted to side purlins. The tie-beams have been cut to create a garret in the 17th century, and a remnant of the rear outshoot retains a collar rafter roof. This site was known as the White Swan Inn from the 19th century until the 1970s.
