Description
There are two statues located in the garden at Magna Cottages, approximately 20 metres southwest of the house. These statues date from the 18th century and are made of Portland stone. They depict a pair of large reclining figures, one male and bearded, and the other female, both semi-draped. The figures recline towards each other, each leaning on an urn that directs its mouth forward and downward. The heads of the statues have been removed and are positioned in front of the figures; when intact, the statues would stand about 2 metres high. The backs of the statues are flat, suggesting they were designed to be placed against a wall. The property is linked to the Mylne family of architects, and it is possible that the figures originated from a pediment or bridge abutment designed by Robert Mylne, who served as Surveyor for the New River Company from 1771 to 1811. The statues may have been intended to represent the two source wells of the New River, named Chad and Emma.
