Description

The Lion Inn is a public house located on Eastwick Road in Eastwick village, marked by the date '1852' on a quatrefoil datestone. It was originally built as a house for John Hodgson of Gilston Park, designed to be a model for middle-sized farmhouses on his estate, possibly by architect P C Hardwick. This tall, red brick building stands two storeys high and features a large Gothic style, facing west. It was already functioning as an inn by 1914. The inn was constructed as the new farmhouse for Green Man Farm, with its associated farm buildings rebuilt to the south around the same time, related to Eastwick Hall Farm from approximately 1855.

The building has steep blue slate roofs, moulded bargeboards with octagonal pendants, and wide verge overhangs. The front facade includes a projecting cross wing on the left and a double-pile range on the right. There is a gabled, single-storey, projecting brick porch at the angle, featuring a gauged brick ogee arch over the entrance, a heavy moulded bargeboard with a pendant, and a steep slate roof. The windows are three-light under flat gauged arches, with two-light windows above the porch and transomed windows on the ground floor. The Lion Inn is an impressive example of a mid-19th century Gothic estate farmhouse, with little alteration, and is part of a group of similar contemporary estate buildings in the village center.
