Description
Nos 76 and 77 on Eastwick Road are a block of two houses built in 1861 for John Hodgson, the lord of the manor. These picturesque red brick Gothic estate houses are characteristic of the Gilston Park Estate. They face south and are designed to resemble a medieval H-plan house, featuring low eaves and central dormer windows, with two-storey gabled cross wings on either side. The steep blue slate roofs have two gabled dormers at the center and tall red brick chimneys with three flues above each cross wing. The houses have cast iron lattice casement windows with stone sills and flat gauged brick arches, with two-light windows on the first floor and three-light windows on the ground floor. Each end has a four-panel moulded door. This pair of red brick Gothic houses from the 19th century remains largely unchanged and is part of a picturesque group in the center of the village.
