Description
This is a group of six headstones located approximately 41 meters southeast of the church tower of the Church of All Saints in Hertford. They date from the late 18th century to the early 19th century and are made of carved Portland stone. Each headstone features a similar design, characterized by a head with a border of carved Rococo scrollwork and a central segmental arched top, adorned with raised urns and swags. The lower panels are square, with raised borders surrounding circular and oval inner panels, and spandrels that display raised Adam style fans and carved raised putti heads.
These headstones commemorate members of the Cherry family, with dates ranging from 1785 to 1826. Notable individuals include Benjamin Cherry, who died in 1785 at the age of 74 and served as an Alderman and four-time mayor of Hertford; Sarah Cherry, who died in 1810 at the age of 75; Benjamin Cherry (1765-1871), the Town Clerk of Hertford; John Cherry, who died in 1826 at the age of 52; Mary Cherry; and Louisa Sarah Ann Cherry, the daughter of John and Mary, who died in 1825 at the age of 22. The incised inscriptions are worn but were recorded by Turnor in 1830. This group of headstones is a fine example of the work of an unknown monumental mason.
