Description
The structure is a weir with a sluice on the River Beane, located about 30 meters north of the drive to Woodhall Park. It was built around 1780 by W. Malcolm as part of the landscaping for Sir T. Rumbold. The cascade face features irregular brick and stone, with stepped setts on one side, and is currently overgrown and in a ruinous condition. There are low stock brick walls on either side that angle out to create a tumbling bay, with a gutter on the left for the sluiced water. Upstream, similar but lower stock brick walls channel water over a rendered weir, which has a central opening that directs water into the sluice. On the weir, there are two panelled piers with pedimented heads dated 1933, which support a timber framework that includes a handle for the gear mechanism used to open and shut the sluice gates.
