Description

The Keep, also known as Pear Tree Cottage, is a 16th-century building with later additions. It originally served as a gardener’s cottage attached to Berkhamsted Place. The construction is a mix of flint and rubble, with some red brickwork and timber framing. The exterior walls display varied construction techniques. Later extensions were added in the late 17th or early 18th century, also built of flint rubble with brick facing. The cottage is two storeys high with attics, and has a tiled roof with two gabled dormers. Exposed timberwork is visible inside.
