Description

Ash is a Grade II* listed building that was formerly part of Berkhamsted Place. The larger part of Berkhamsted Place, which has since been demolished, was located to the south. The building features whitewashed brick with a rubble base and is believed to have an Anglo-Saxon core dating back to the medieval period, making it likely the site where William I received the submission of the Saxon thegns. It is two storeys high and has sash and casement windows, along with a tiled hipped roof. The southern section of the building fills the space between the medieval house and the main part of Berkhamsted Place, of which a fragment of the north-west chequerboard flint and ashlar front remains.
