Description

H H Dickman, Chemists is a late 19th-century house that was converted for chemist use in 1914, featuring a shop front and fittings from 1920. The building is constructed of brick with a glazed wood frame shop front. The ground floor serves as a shop with offices at the rear, while the upper levels provide residential and additional shop accommodation.

The exterior showcases an advanced shop front with a gilded fascia that reads 'CHEMIST H.H. DICKMAN OPTICIANS'. It has slender colonnette mullions, with three bays on the left side. The central bay is advanced and features curved edges above a shallow marble plinth. To the right is a recessed entrance bay with shallow glazed cabinets on the sides and a deep glazed display cabinet at the back. A glazed door on the left has a diamond mullion overlight, and there is a continuous band of glazed overlights with diamond glazing bars above each bay, paired over the entrance.

Inside, the ground floor includes the shop at the front, a small raised room to the right, and a raised dispensing department at the rear. The front display window has glazed doors leading into the shop. There are fitted glazed cabinets on the right wall, shelving on the left wall with cabinets below that contain multiple small drawers labeled for drugs and chemicals. Free-standing glazed mahogany framed cabinets serve as display counters. At the back, there is a tall shelving unit with a mirrored back and a raised sign that reads 'DISPENSING DEPARTMENT.' The interior features a full-height staircase and tiled floors, with the primary interest being the ground floor shop.
