Description
Three barns and a covered gateway are located adjacent to Hill Farm, 45 meters east of the house. The Hay Barn at the southern end is from the early 17th century, the Straw Barn at the northern end is from the mid-17th century, and the Wood Barn in the middle is from the late 17th century. The gateway to the north is dated 'SL WL 1820 JC' on the tie beam.
These structures feature a timber frame on low red brick sills, are dark weatherboarded, and have steep pitched roofs, which are now covered in slates, except for the Hay Barn, which is covered in corrugated iron. The barns form an L-shaped range of tall unaisled buildings facing into the yard on the west, with the gateway situated between the middle and northern barns.
The Straw Barn has four bays and includes a gabled west porch at the second bay from the north, with opposed double doors. It features swept jowled bay posts, unjowled mid-bay posts, long curved braces to the tie-beams, and straight inclined queen-posts supporting single purlins without collars, where the principal rafter is reduced in section. The gateway consists of two bays, with the southern bay open and a simple purlin roof.
The Wood Barn, immediately south of the gateway, has three bays and a gabled west porch at the middle bay. It includes cyma-shaped jowls to the posts, unjowled mid-bay posts in the end bays, long curved braces to the tie-beams, and convex curved queen-posts supporting a single purlin on each slope without collars. A simple splayed scarf joint is present at the mid-bay purlin, and a series of numbered joints are noticeable.
The Hay Barn extends west from the southern end of the Wood Barn and predates it. It has four bays and features a gabled north porch at the second bay from the west. The Hay Barn includes jowled bay-posts, unjowled mid-bay posts, a mid-height rail jointed in-line, long curved braces to cambered tie-beams, and a single heavy purlin on each slope. Slightly convex-curved queen-posts support the purlin without collars, and square-butted scarf joints are present. There is a winnowing door at the rear of the porch bay and pitching doors at the rear in the other three bays. The west end is internally plastered to half height, suggesting it was used for storing grain.
