Description

The lych gate at St Paul's Church, built around 1863 in memory of Captain George Clayton, features oak construction on low brick and flint walls topped with chamfered stone. It has a shingled roof with decorative gables at both the front and rear, and a central cross axial on the ridge. Each side has a large square post supported by a long sleeper beam, which carries a longer wallplate that is arch braced from the raking prop. The central battlemented cambered tie-beam supports a king-post with axial braces leading to the ridge beam, along with curved V-struts to the middle rafter. The moulded bargeboards have scrolled feet that notch over the moulded ends of the wallplates, and there is a central diagonal pendant and a moulded member under the verge. The gate includes a pair of braced oak gates with studded iron capping, and there is a plaque on the west wallplate. This structure is included for its group value.
