Description

CHIPPERFIELD THE COMMON TL 0401 (North side) 12/64 Lych gate at - St. Pauls Church

GV II

Lych gate. Circa 1863 in memory of Capt George Clayton. Oak on brick and flint low walls with chamfered stone capping. Shingled roof with decorative gable to front and rear and a central cross axial on ridge. Large square post on each side propped from a long sleeper beam carries a longer wallplate arch braced from the raking prop. Central battlemented cambered tie-beam carries king-post with axial braces to ridge beam and curved V-struts to middle rafter. Moulded bargeboards have scrolled feet notched over moulded ends of wallplates, central diagonal pendant and moulded member under verge. A pair of braced oak gates with studded iron capping. Plaque on W wallplate. Included for group value.
