Description

The lychgate at St Paul's Church is a Grade II* listed structure, built with rubble and topped by a pyramidal slate roof that slightly feathers out towards the eaves. The lychgate is essentially square, featuring concave sides that extend to create the appearance of diagonal buttresses, which taper slightly—a hallmark of the architect Wilson's design. Each face has decorative lead guttering with cable moulding and stylised foliate bosses in shallow relief, along with exposed beam ends below.

On the entrance sides, set back and supported by triangular corbels, are heavy oak double lintels with oak infill blocks in between. These concave lintels complement the convex sweep of the inner sides. There are Welsh and English biblical inscriptions on the road-facing and church-facing sides, respectively, and three plain rectangular lights on the flanking sides. Atop the roof is a lead figure of an angel, and there are later plain oak gates added to the road front in 1936.

Inside, the lychgate features a plastered dome supported by a round pegged oak frame, with flat applied plaster decoration of crosses and foliage. An intricately designed and carved oak boss displays the date 1906, and there are segmental oak benches along the sides.
