Description

Charter Tower is a 16th-century structure that is a remnant of the former Manor House of Sir Richard Combe. It is built from ashlar and consists of two storeys, featuring a porch on the ground floor. The building has a square plan and showcases two superimposed orders with attached columns, with Doric columns on the ground floor. Below the first-floor window, there is a panel carved with the arms of Sir Richard Combe, although it is much worn and almost obliterated. Sir Richard Combe was the owner and builder of the house, which was constructed between 1557 and 1595 on the site of an earlier house. Until recently, the tower was covered in ivy. Charter Tower, along with the Manor House Garden Walls, forms a group of historical significance.
