Description

The Church of St Mary is a substantial building dating from circa 1140-80, constructed of flint rubble and Roman bricks, with ashlar quoins, dressings, and a chancel vault. It is laid out on a Latin cross plan and includes a crossing tower topped with a 13th-century spire. The church features a 14th-century south porch, a 15th-century north porch, and a nave clerestory. A 14th-century brass is located in the south aisle. A monument to Sir Astley Paston Cooper was erected in 1841. In 1858, stained glass windows were installed in the south chancel, and a vaulted north-east room, possibly a sacristy, with an east apse was added.
