Description

The Town Hall, located on the west side of High Street, was built in 1851 with extensions added in 1857, 1861, and 1868. It was designed by architect George Low and is constructed of red brick with stone dressings in the Jacobean style. The building features a Welsh slated roof with parapets and three curvilinear gables. The ground floor has segmentally arched windows and an arcade on the right side. The first floor includes casement windows with stone mullions and transoms, some of which have balconies. A tower with an octagonal top stage is also part of the design. The extensions from 1857 and 1861 on the right were built as a Corn Exchange. The Town Hall, along with Nos 44 and 44A, forms a group of buildings.
