Description
This is an early 18th-century building with a 16th-century timber-framed core. The front facade dates to the earlier 18th century, while the rear elevation retains timber framing, partly refaced with whitewashed brick and partly weatherboarded. The roof is covered with old tiles. The building is two storeys high with an attic, featuring a round-headed wall with an attic window. A rainwater head dated 1736 is present, with the initials "S above W S," which matches a design found on nearby properties dated 1728. The first floor has three 19th-century sash windows with segmental arches. A mid-19th century double-fronted shop occupies the ground floor with tall wooden mullions to the elliptically arched windows and a reeded surround to the central door, which leads up steps. The shop has a modern fascia. The interior is said to contain 16th-century panelling. A distinctive original 16th-century chimney stack remains, characterized by tall diagonally set shafts. The building forms a group with numbers 57 and 83 (odd) and numbers 63A and 79A.
