Description
This barn, now functioning as a showroom, dates back to the 16th century, with a 19th-century brick rear wing. It features a timber frame covered with dark weatherboarding and has a half-hipped roof that is now slated with large slates. The red brick rear wing also has a slate roof. The barn is five bays tall and faces south, with a projecting gabled porch at the middle bay. The two-storey rear wing has framework on brick piers that once supported a horse engine in the lower part. The structure includes jowled posts with long curved braces connecting to the tie beams, and wide bays with an unjowled post at the mid bay. Each slope has one butt purlin with curved wind braces, and queen struts are present at the lower angles of the truss, although there is no collar. Iron straps have been added to reinforce the purlin joints with the principals. The south wallplate features a squint butted scarf joint.
