Description

No. 36 on Tring Road is a house that was once known as The White Hart Inn. It dates back to the 17th century but was refronted in the mid-18th century and renovated in the 19th century. The building features an exposed timber frame with plastered or painted brick infill on the first floor of the rear wall and the north side of the rear wing. The south wall is made of painted brick, while the north gable has tarred brick infill and a weatherboarded gable top. The front, which is made of mid-18th century red brick, has a chequered pattern with vitrified headers and is topped with steep old red tile roofs.

This L-shaped house faces west and has two storeys and an attic in the front range, with a 1½ storey rear range. The west front includes a plinth and gauged red brick segmental arches on both floors. There are two windows on each floor, with a recessed central area above the door that shows marks of a former fire insurance plate. The windows are three-light wooden casements that are slightly recessed. The front door is a heavy frame with half glazing, dating from the 19th century. A 18th-century corner chimney is located at the northwest. The south gable reveals exposed timbers on the first floor, with a roughcast gable above. Each floor has a two-light casement window in the rear room. The rear wall also shows exposed timbers, and there is a very large external 18th-century chimney with three flues at the back of the south half of the front block, along with an adjoining brick flue that serves a lean-to kitchen extension located to the south of the timber-framed 17th-century rear wing.
