Description

Old Thatch is a house dating from the 16th century, with alterations made in the 17th century. It is timber-framed with painted brick infill – some of the brickwork is in a herringbone pattern – and has a steep thatched roof. The house is set back from the road and faces north, with two equal bays. It features a large external chimney on the west gable and a smaller internal chimney on the east gable. There are two windows on the front facade, with a plank door leading into the left-hand room. The windows are 3-light flush casements, and the door is of plank construction. The exposed timber frame reveals jowled posts, a mid-height rail, widely-spaced studs, thin straight tension braces, and a clasped-purlin roof with collars. Two recessed dormers are visible at the eaves. The front windows have been cut through the mid-height rail, suggesting that a floor was inserted into what was originally a single-storey house.
