Description

The Long Marston War Memorial is a granite structure built by Messrs Newman and Harper on a raised mound, surrounded by a chain link and granite post fence. It was unveiled by Lord Rothschild and dedicated in August 1921.

The memorial features a Celtic cross that stands approximately 5.8 meters high. Access to the memorial is via a flight of three steps leading up from ground level. It consists of a stone plinth with a three-tiered base, topped by the cross. The cross has a tapered base, which bears an inscription along with the names of ten individuals who died in World War I and one from World War II. The inscription reads: "IN MEMORY OF/THE GALLANT MEN/OF THIS VILLAGE WHO FOUGHT AND FELL IN/THE GREAT WAR/1914-1918/(NAMES)/THEY DID THEIR DUTY FOR KING AND COUNTRY/1939-1945/(NAME)."

The cross features a tapering shaft adorned with a band of carved lattice decoration at the bottom. The arms of the cross are embellished with carved interlacing circular and cruciform motifs, which are encircled by a guilloche band.
