Description

Nos. 1, 3, and 5 High Street comprise three houses, with Nos. 1 and 5 now used as commercial premises. The building likely dates back to the 17th century or earlier, with a northern wing of No. 1 being added in the early 18th century. It is timber-framed with a brick nogged rear, and the front is cased in red brick, with the northern wing also constructed of brick. The roofs are covered with steep old red tiles, and the northern wing has a hipped roof. The building forms a long, low, L-shaped block, with the northern wing extending eastwards toward The Nap.

The front, facing west, has two storeys and six windows. Each house has two windows. No. 1, at the northern end, has a recessed sash window with six-over-six panes, plastered reveals, and a segmental arch on the left-hand side (and on the north side) at the first floor. It also has an early 18th-century three-light mullioned window with a plate casement on the fill. A half-glazed door sits between two 19th-century shop windows with glazing bars and fascias. No. 3 has three-light wooden casement windows on the first floor, with a segmental arch adjacent to the six-panel door, which is divided into two flush, two moulded and two glazed panels. No. 5 has two three-light wooden casements on the first floor, and a shopfront featuring two shallow, bow windows with glazing bars flanking glazed double doors, all under a continuous fascia.

The interior of No. 1 reveals an exposed timber-framed partition, and each house has chamfered axial beams. The building occupies a prominent corner location at the start of High Street. It is included on the list for its group value.
