Description
Nash Mills Lock on the Grand Union Canal is a canal lock built around 1797 as part of the Grand Junction Canal Company, which later became the Grand Union Canal in 1929. The iron hinge on the upper gate is dated 1877, indicating possible repairs at that time. The lock features early 20th century steps and revetment at the lower gate. It is constructed from brick and stone masonry, with brown engineering brick steps and revetment at the lower gate. The wooden gates have steel extensions to the beams. The lock measures 88 feet by 16 feet, designed to accommodate narrow boats in pairs. There are gate and ground paddles for the upper gates, and gate paddles only for the lower gates. The eastern half of the lock is located in Abbots Langley civil parish in Three Rivers District.
