Description

The John Dickinson & Co war memorial, unveiled in 1929, honors the workers of the company who died in the First and Second World Wars.

This memorial features a free-standing granite cross and a separate bronze plaque set in a granite surround, attached to a brick wall. The rough-hewn granite wheel cross is mounted on a square, tapering plinth with a single-stepped base. On the front (south-west) side of the plinth, there is a recessed panel with lead lettering in low relief that reads: ‘TO THE / UNDYING MEMORY OF / OUR FELLOW WORKERS / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN / THE GREAT WAR / 1914 - 1918 / ALSO / 1939 - 1945’. Behind the cross, a rectangular cast-bronze plaque with a segmental head is mounted within a granite surround, supported by the brick wall. This bronze plaque features the text in low relief: ‘TO THE ETERNAL HONOUR AND UNDYING / MEMORY OF THE GALLANT MEN OF THE FIRM OF / JOHN DICKINSON AND CO WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919 / (212 NAMES) / GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS’.

A short bronze plaque with 17 names of the First World War fallen was later added beneath the first plaque. Additionally, a third bronze plaque was added after the Second World War, which reads ‘TO THE GLORY OF THE MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE WORLD WAR 1939 -1945’ and lists 132 names of the fallen. The memorial is located within the garden of the former Apsley Mill cottage (which is also listed at Grade II), near the corner of Stationers Place, facing south-west towards London Road.
