Description
There are 10 tombstones located in two rows of five, positioned 10 meters and 12 meters to the west of the church tower in the churchyard of Great Gaddesden. The tombstones include inscriptions for Jeremiah Rolph of Gaddesden Row from 1789, Mary Rolph from 1800, Mary Davison from 1829, Joseph Davison from 1833, and Mary Arnott Chennells from 1833, which features a half-round section grave slab. The row closer to the tower includes Charlotte Rolph from 1822, Jeremiah Rolph from 1830, Sarah Rolph from 1836, Caroline Cooper from 1817, and Thomas Cooper from 1834. These tombstones are made of white freestone, each approximately 1.5 meters high and broad, designed to follow a consistent style as a group. Each stone has a moulded segmental head and a deep band of carved decoration above the inscribed plain field. The ornamentation follows the same pattern but varies in execution. An open book is centrally placed on a bracket supported by symmetrical acanthus scrolls, with winged cherubs' heads flanking the book, and the frame is completed by a heavy moulded scroll or truss at each end.
