Description
This is a rare 17th-century red brick school building, originally constructed in 1640 for Richard Dewhurst. It is a single-story building with attics and a modern tile roof. The east elevation features six brick-coped gables above four-light brick-mullioned windows, with moulded, stepped buttresses separating the windows. The central two windows are taller than the others. A continuous plinth runs along the base, and a floor band incorporates a plaque reading 'RD 1640' to the third gable from the left. A one-bay yellow stock brick extension continues the floor band on the north side. The south end has a tall chimney stack consisting of six square, conjoined shafts. A square, projecting staircase tower is located on the south end of the west elevation; it is gabled on two sides with a chamfered arch-headed door on the south ground floor and a date plaque to the gable. A taller, gabled square projection is situated north of the staircase tower. The remainder of the west side includes an attached 19th-century gabled extension built in salmon pink brick, replicating the mullioned windows and moulded buttresses of the main building.
