Description

Bishops College, located in Cheshunt, is an earlier 18th century and circa 1810 red brick structure that forms the front of a larger college built between 1870 and 1871 by architects Lander and Bedells. This larger section is constructed of yellow brick with stone and black and white cut-brick dressings, topped with slate roofs. The earlier 18th century block, which has four windows and is set back from the road, is two storeys tall and features chequered brickwork and a floor band. It has a cut bracketed door hood and an architrave surround, along with flush sash windows, some of which on the right side retain their original thick glazing bars.

The taller circa 1810 block projects to the south and includes two dummy windows, a brick modillion cornice, and a floor band, with the date 1746 noted on the rainwater head. The 1870-1 portion at the rear is arranged in a large L-plan and features a tall campanile bell tower at the southwest angle, which has a pyramid roof and projecting gablets supported by columns and adorned with gargoyles and cusped stone and wood ornaments. The entrance on the south side is framed by a semi-circular oriel window.

On the west side, there is a chapter-house-style building with decorated period Gothic windows. The east side presents a ten-window range in Venetian Gothic style, featuring two-window gabled end bays, flush stone floor bands, and black and white cut-brick sash window arches. Additionally, there are one-storey extensions from the 1930s on the east side. The west elevation is three storeys high and includes 6/6-pane sash windows on the ground and first floors.
